Eden College needs more buses
April 23, 2026 00:00:00
Eden Mohila College is one of the country's traditional and historic institutions in the capital. Established in 1873, the college is about 153 years old and has played a significant role in advancing women's education. However, despite its long-standing legacy, the students of this institution are currently facing a serious transportation crisis.
At present, the college has only five buses for nearly 35,000 female students, which is grossly inadequate. As a result, each bus is forced to carry far more passengers than its capacity allows.
During examination periods, the situation becomes even more critical, often leading to the suspension of bus services due to excessive pressure and
overcrowding.
This shortage has a direct impact on students' education. Many students are discouraged from continuing their studies at the institution due to transportation difficulties. Although female students from distant areas are eager to pursue higher education here, the lack of a safe and sufficient transport system often disrupts their academic journey.
Moreover, those who continue to attend classes are frequently exposed to unpleasant incidents and harassment while travelling in overcrowded public transport after classes. This creates an unsafe and distressing environment for young women striving for higher education.
This situation sends a troubling message about the state of a campus that has historically contributed to women's empowerment through education. Despite repeated appeals from students to the administration for additional buses, the issue remains unresolved. Administrative delay, neglect of student demands, and repeated references to budget constraints have contributed to the continuation of this crisis.
It is urgent that the authorities concerned take immediate and effective steps to address the transportation shortage and ensure safe, reliable bus facilities for students. Ensuring safe access to education is not a privilege but a basic necessity, especially in an institution dedicated to women's higher learning.
