Education to fight corruption

December 25, 2021 00:00:00

Bangladesh routinely finds itself among the most corrupt countries in the world. The country has reportedly slipped two places in the Global Corruption Perception Index 2020 released by the Transparency International (TI), and is ahead only of Afghanistan in tackling graft among its South Asian neighbours. We often hear the government claiming to bring reforms to root out corruption. However, little has changed. We are still one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

A way to eradicate corruption could be investment in educating people. We have a significant proportion of the younger population who requires good education. Therefore, the government should focus on reforming education and bringing all out-of-school children into education. To combat corrupt mindsets and practices, we need an educated younger generation. Education will inculcate morality and ethics in our youths. These values run contrary to corruption, which undermines the rule of law, violates human rights, and bring other social evils. Through education, people can be made to realise the harmful effects of corruption.
