Empowering women entrepreneurs

February 01, 2025 00:00:00

Women entrepreneurs are emerging as a powerful force, driving innovation, economic growth and social change. Once confined to traditional roles, women are now providing leadership to businesses across diverse industries such as textiles, technology, agriculture, and e-commerce, proving their resilience and creativity.

The rise of women-led enterprises in Bangladesh has been remarkable, with initiatives like boutique shops, handicraft businesses, and online stores gaining popularity. The success of brands like Aarong, led by BRAC, and small enterprises in rural areas exemplifies how women have transformed both urban and rural economies. Women in e-commerce, supported by platforms like Daraz and ShopUp, have redefined the way business is conducted, especially in a digital-first economy.

Despite this progress, women entrepreneurs face significant challenges. Limited access to financial resources, a lack of proper training, and societal expectations often hinder their growth. Many struggle to secure loans or investment due to biases in financial institutions.

However, government programmes like the SME Foundation and organisations such as the Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BWCCI) have been instrumental in empowering women by providing training, funding, and networking opportunities. Microfinance institutions such as Grameen Bank and BRAC have played a pivotal role in encouraging women in rural areas to take up entrepreneurship. These initiatives not only uplift families but also contribute significantly to the national economy.

According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, women entrepreneurs are major contributors to the country's micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), creating jobs and fostering economic resilience.

According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, women entrepreneurs play a significant role in the growth and development of the country's micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). These women are not only driving economic activity but are also proving key agents of job creation, particularly in areas where formal employment opportunities may be limited.

The journey of women entrepreneurs in Bangladesh is a story of resilience, ambition, and transformation. By overcoming challenges and contributing meaningfully to society, they are paving the way for a more inclusive and prosperous future. Supporting these trailblazers with better policies, access to capital, and training will ensure they reach their full potential, thereby fuelling Bangladesh's growth story.
