Encouraging voluntary donation of blood

April 29, 2018 00:00:00

WITH the world becoming more and more complex, healthcare is one area that calls for higher attention than ever before. Health complications are increasing so much in number that medical science often appears inadequate to combat the lengthy list of ailments. For example, at times some human bodies stop producing blood and needs outside help. This is when blood donation becomes necessary. Donation of blood is therefore a noble gesture that saves some people from certain death. But there are wrong perceptions in the society and many believe that if they donate blood they will be weaker which is far from the truth. Voluntary blood donation is handled by several different organisations and about 30 per cent of the nation's blood supply comes from donations. We need to change the mindset of the people so that they come forward and donate blood voluntarily. High blood pressure is at times misconceived as a deterrent for blood donation, which is not true. Blood pressure of everyone is checked by qualified doctors prior to donation and intending donors can easily donate blood with clearance from competent doctors. Blood donation is actually good for patients suffering from hypertension. The media should therefore highlight these points and encourage people to voluntarily donate blood. Voluntary donors are more preferred by the physicians as blood from professional donors does not often fulfill doctors' requirements and is sometimes found polluted.
