Energy conservation and banking efficiency

March 18, 2026 00:00:00

During the ongoing fuel crisis in Bangladesh, caused by the reduced petroleum supply amid the US-Iran conflict, Bangladesh Bank issued a circular to limit the use of electricity and other utilities, including urging bankers to use public transport instead of personal vehicles. The crisis is gradually intensifying, with long queues forming at filling stations, while demand far exceeds the current supply.

As a result, people have been spending a significant amount of time obtaining fuel in recent days. Those whose livelihoods depend on transportation are facing serious difficulties, particularly during Ramadan. While the circular reflects a prudent approach by Bangladesh Bank to mitigate the national crisis, questions remain about the adequacy of standard public transport. Moreover, delays in commuting could significantly hamper work efficiency.

It is also noteworthy that bank executives do not receive a conveyance allowance; instead, they are provided with car maintenance support, which is generally insufficient to cover actual expenses. Consequently, the circular could adversely affect their standard of living. Furthermore, relying on public transport is likely to disrupt client service due to heavy traffic.

Therefore, it is urgent for the central bank to introduce additional measures, such as proper allowances that cover actual maintenance costs, to support employee mobility. Without such incentives, both service quality and institutional growth may slow due to a lack of financial motivation.
