Ensuring safe internet

October 23, 2021 00:00:00

Bangladesh is now witnessing a rising trend of cyber crimes. Through cyber hacking, a group of internet users are getting involved in various types of mind-boggling cyber crimes. Most of these hacking incidents take place on social media like Facebook. The number of information thefts and crimes through hacking online accounts is also on the rise. In addition to hacking, the incidence of cyber bullying is alarmingly increasing in our country. And in this case, women are the worst sufferers. As many as 90 per cent of the victims of cyber hacking and bullying are between the ages of 18 and 30, media reports say.

Therefore, it is important for young people, especially women, to maintain a healthy cyber culture. The government, alone, cannot help us in this issue. Cyber crimes like bullying and hacking can be handled well if we can raise cyber awareness and literacy for all users, particularly among young women. The users should be aware of various phishing apps. The authorities concerned can also reduce incidents of cyber crimes greatly if they could strictly implement the existing laws of information and communication technology. We must also remember that it is significant not only to use internet regularly, but also to be familiar with safe internet.
