Eradication of tuberculosis

October 01, 2022 00:00:00

Tuberculosis is a common cause of mortality across the world. It continues to be a major public health threat in Bangladesh, as well. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the incidence of TB is higher in 22 countries of the world. Bangladesh ranks sixth among those countries. A total of 292,940 new TB patients were reportedly identified in the country in 2020 while around 39,000 people die of TB every year. The diagnosis and mortality rates due to this infectious disease are increasing alarmingly day by day.

Drives for controlling tuberculosis are hampered by slow and insensitive diagnostic methods. Early detection is essential to reduce the death rate and interrupt transmission caused by this disease. The World Health Organization has recently endorsed the Gene Xpert MTB/RIF test for developing countries like Bangladesh. The authorities concerned should immediately implement this recommendation to eradicate tuberculosis from our country.
