LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Establishing a sports science university

July 02, 2026 00:00:00

A significant part of Bangladesh's positive global reputation comes from sports. Our players have earned international recognition in cricket, football, hockey, volleyball, and archery. The Bangladesh cricket team is currently among the world's top teams, while players such as Mohammad Ashraful, Shakib Al Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman, and Nahid Rana have brought pride to the nation.

Bangladeshis are passionate about sports. Whether it is cricket or football, the enthusiasm of fans is remarkable. Although the national football team has yet to reach the highest level, scientific training and modern coaching can help Bangladesh become more competitive internationally. This is why establishing a Sports Science University has become a necessity.

Despite sports being immensely popular, Bangladesh has made little progress in sports science, coaching, and research. None of the country's universities is dedicated to sports science, and even at BKSP, the country's premier sports training institute, coaching largely depends on foreign qualifications. A specialised university would promote advanced education, strengthen research, reduce dependence on foreign expertise, and create skilled coaches, sports scientists, and other professionals.

Modern sports are driven by science. Psychology, nutrition, biomechanics, injury management, and data analytics have become essential components of athletic success. A Sports Science University would not only improve the performance of athletes but also create new career opportunities and contribute to employment generation.

The need for such an institution was recently highlighted at a seminar held at Rajshahi College, where academics, policymakers, and sports experts discussed its importance. Participants argued that a Sports Science University would strengthen Bangladesh's sports sector, promote research, and support economic development. They also noted that Rajshahi offers suitable land, good transport connectivity, and a student-friendly environment, making it an ideal location for the proposed university.

Establishing a Sports Science University is no longer a luxury-it is an investment in Bangladesh's sporting future and human capital.
