Evaly fraud: who is responsible?
September 20, 2021 00:00:00
The arrest of e-commerce house Evaly's CEO Mohammad Rassel and his wife Shamima Nasrin finally exposed the fraudulent activities. The RAB arrested the couple for embezzling the money of thousands of consumers. According to different media reports, Evaly embezzled at least Tk 10 billion from consumers using fraudulence in the name of selling goods. Customers are now worried about whether they would get back their money or the products.
The e-commerce company was launched in December 2018. From the very beginning, it offered lucrative discounts on different goods which sometimes seem unrealistic. Gradually, it had started to fail in delivery of the products despite receiving payments. But, a section of media also promoted Evaly and its owners. For example, a monthly business magazine made a cover story on Russel and Shamaima this year. Some also published advertisements for Evaly. These media should also bear some responsibility for the Evaly scam.
The commerce ministry said that it would not take any responsibility in the e-commerce scam. This is not acceptable. The government should take appropriate measures so that customers can get back their money. All the assets of the company should be liquidated immediately in this regard.
