Faculty accountability in public universities

Public university teachers play a vital role in shaping the nation's future, and many are dedicated educators and researchers. However, greater accountability is necessary to ensure that public resources are used effectively. Bangladesh allocates only around 1.7-2.0 per cent of its GDP to education, making the efficient performance of publicly funded institutions even more important.

A common concern among students is that some faculty members maintain strict punctuality and regular teaching schedules when serving as guest lecturers at private universities, where compensation is directly linked to teaching hours. In contrast, classes in some public universities are often cancelled, rescheduled, or conducted irregularly, while delayed examinations and result publication often prolong students' academic lives.

Public university teachers are not above accountability. Steps must be taken to ensure that every public university teacher fulfils his/her responsibilities to students and taxpayers with the same professionalism expected in any publicly funded institution.
