Finding real causes of fires in Dhaka
May 22, 2025 00:00:00
A series of devastating fires has struck several parts of Dhaka in recent days, leaving the city's residents alarmed and deeply concerned. Electrical short circuits, kitchen negligence, gas leaks, and a serious lack of fire safety precautions are believed to be the primary causes, though other contributing factors may also be involved.
One of the most tragic recent incidents occurred at a restaurant in a multi-storey building on Bailey Road. The fire began in the kitchen and quickly engulfed the entire structure. Numerous fatalities and severe injuries were reported. Rescue efforts were delayed due to the building's inadequate fire extinguishing systems, which worsened the death toll.
At the same time, another fire broke out in a Secretariat building, along with a separate incident in a restaurant in Uttara. These tragedies highlight a critical issue: most residential and commercial buildings in the capital lack adequate fire safety measures.
The risk of such disasters has increased significantly due to the current extreme heat and frequent power outages. However, negligence and poor management remain major contributors-it's not solely natural causes to blame. The situation is becoming increasingly concerning and, in some aspects, even mysterious.
We urge the authorities to conduct thorough investigations to determine the exact causes of these incidents. It is equally important to enhance the capacity of the fire services and to assess and upgrade fire safety infrastructure in all buildings, in accordance with the Bangladesh National Building Code. Public awareness must also be raised through campaigns and training programs. It is our sincere hope that the relevant authorities will take swift and decisive action to ensure the safety and well-being of the city's residents.
