In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a distant concept-it is already reshaping daily life, especially in consumer behaviour. With over 130 million internet users and growing smartphone usage, Bangladesh is witnessing a digital transformation driven by AI technologies.
From personalised recommendations on e-commerce platforms like Daraz to AI-powered chatbots across banks and telecoms, consumers are frequently engaging with intelligent systems, often unknowingly. As Bangladesh moves towards its Vision 2041 digital economy goals, AI's influence is not just technological-it is fundamentally altering market dynamics.
AI enhances personalisation and efficiency. Businesses now use algorithms to predict preferences, manage inventories, and target marketing more precisely. This not only improves consumer satisfaction but also boosts operational effectiveness. However, this transformation comes with serious challenges.
Data privacy remains a pressing concern. Many users are unaware of how their information is collected and used, increasing the risk of exploitation. Additionally, algorithmic bias often marginalises rural or underprivileged users, while manipulative interface designs raise ethical questions about consumer autonomy, especially among the youth.
To address these concerns, Bangladesh must act decisively. A robust data protection framework is essential to ensure consent and safeguard rights. Businesses must also commit to algorithmic transparency to maintain consumer trust. Promoting digital literacy-especially in rural areas-can help users identify and resist deceptive digital tactics.
Furthermore, national AI standards should be established through collaboration between the government, private sector, and educational institutions. Small businesses must be supported with affordable AI access, and an independent AI consumer watchdog should be created to oversee ethical practices. Finally, AI ethics should be embedded into business education to build a responsible future workforce.
AI is fundamentally transforming how Bangladeshis shop, decide, and interact with brands. If approached with foresight, fairness, and strong governance, AI can be a force for inclusion and empowerment in the digital economy.
