Flower festival outside capital

January 27, 2026 00:00:00

The winter in Bangladesh becomes aesthetically beautiful and vibrantly colourful when a diverse array of seasonal flowers appears in landscapes, markets, institutions, and festivals. Winter is the peak flowering season, bringing a boom for growers due to favourable weather conditions. During this period, flower markets thrive because of high demand and eye-catching ikebana (artistic flower arrangement) demonstrations. Market turnover during this short period exceeds BDT 80 million, particularly around Pohela Falgun and other occasions.

The capital recently hosted a three-day flower festival at Ramna Ground, organised by the Public Works Department (PWD), showcasing various types of lively seasonal flowers. Such displays have a profound and positive impact on the human mind, reducing stress and fostering emotional well-being, while delighting city dwellers.

The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) could be involved in demonstrating horticultural techniques, allowing visitors to learn how to manage their home gardens. The department's Horticulture Centres, present in most districts, could organise flower shows outside the capital to bring recreation and knowledge to more people. This would also help floriculture gain momentum across the country.

Districts like Jashore, already known as a flower hub, have yet to host a flower festival. Initiatives like this could encourage the mobile-centric generation to reconnect with nature and appreciate the seasonal beauty.
