Freeing metro stations of congestion
January 28, 2025 00:00:00
Using the metro rail is one of the most effective ways to avoid traffic congestion in Dhaka. It not only saves time but also makes commuting more convenient and cost-effective for urban residents. However, the boarding and disembarking process at metro stations is often cumbersome, particularly in busy areas such as Motijheel.
Rickshaws and auto-rickshaws often line both sides of the roads in Motijheel, one of Dhaka's busiest neighbourhoods. These vehicles not only impede pedestrian movement but also slow down the overall traffic flow. The situation worsens near metro rail stations, where increased vehicle pressure during passenger boarding and alighting exacerbates the problem. For instance, areas along the metro rail route from Motijheel to Paltan frequently experience severe traffic congestion due to the overcrowding of rickshaws and other vehicles. As a result, commuters often face delays of 15 minutes or more, disrupting their daily routines.
Additionally, the rickshaws and auto rickshaws that are carelessly parked near metro stations cause major problems for passengers. Apart from causing delays, this disorderly situation increases the risk of accidents. The issue is further exacerbated by the lack of adequate pedestrian walkways around the station entrances and exits.
Effective measures must be taken to solve this problem. Rickshaws and auto-rickshaws should be given designated parking spaces or stoppage areas to keep the roads clear of traffic. Additionally, it is important to ensure designated pedestrian lanes and appropriate walkways close to the stations. To reduce traffic in these regions, active traffic control is also crucial. Addressing these issues in Motijheel and the surrounding neighbourhoods will not only ease traffic congestion but also enhance the overall efficiency of the city's transportation system.
