Green Dhaka, clean Dhaka

March 09, 2018 00:00:00

THE other day I was talking to a fellow passenger in a bus who sat beside me while I was returning home from my office. As we were approaching Bonosree area he told me that although the residents there are blessed with a lake, it is also a matter of regret that the lake is choked by filthy substances.

It was dying due to indiscriminate disposal of waste by mindless people. The lake water had turned murky and foul smell was coming out all the time and it became an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes.

However, I was an avid listener only and did not participate in any discussions with him. He was of the opinion that if the residents of surrounding areas took care of the lake and planted trees on their own initiatives, the lake would come back to life again and could be a site to watch.

Instead the owners of land on the lake side are encroaching upon the lake and dumping their household waste into it.

We always blame the government or the city corporations for a dirty city being oblivious of our civic responsibilities.

If we are committed to keep our city clean and healthy we shall not allow filthy substances to be thrown into the lake under any circumstances and in this way we can move a few steps ahead towards a clean and green Dhaka city.
