ICU crisis at Rajshahi medical

April 10, 2026 00:00:00

Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, the largest healthcare centre in the northern region of Bangladesh, has long been regarded as a beacon of hope for patients in the region. However, this vital institution is currently grappling with a severe shortage of intensive care unit (ICU) facilities.

Due to the lack of ICU support during emergencies, many patients are compelled to travel to distant locations, including Dhaka. This not only delays urgent treatment but also imposes significant financial and emotional burdens on families. Critically ill children are among the worst affected. Despite medical advice recommending ICU care, many are treated in general wards due to the unavailability of beds. Consequently, their conditions often deteriorate, and, in many tragic cases, result in death.

Addressing this crisis requires immediate and effective measures. The number of ICU beds must be increased, alongside the provision of modern medical equipment. At the same time, skilled doctors, nurses, and technicians must be recruited and adequately trained to strengthen human resources. Increased budgetary allocation and investment from the government and relevant authorities are essential. Ensuring transparency and accountability in ICU management is equally crucial.

Introducing a digital system for patient admission and bed allocation could help reduce irregularities and enable patients to access real-time information on ICU availability.

Furthermore, the private sector can play a vital role in expanding ICU services through public-private partnerships. Strengthening advanced healthcare facilities at district and upazila levels would also help ease the overwhelming pressure on Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
