Investment opportunities in renewable energy

November 09, 2024 00:00:00

Bangladesh aspires for rapid economic growth and it has rising demand for energy, necessitating an immediate diversification of its energy sources and lessening of its reliance on fossil fuels. The renewable energy sector offers a viable option for sustainable development, as Bangladesh is well-positioned to capitalise on its unique geographic advantages and rising energy needs. Investing in renewable energy is crucial to enhancing energy security, achieving climate objectives, and promoting sustainable growth.

Solar energy remains Bangladesh's most practical and scalable renewable resource, thanks to its tropical climate and year-round abundant sunlight. Key initiatives include developing extensive solar parks, implementing rooftop solar systems for industrial and commercial buildings, and offering off-grid solar solutions for rural communities.

Bangladesh also has a coastline exceeding 700 kilometres, presenting significant opportunities for wind energy development, particularly in coastal regions like Cox's Bazar and Kuakata. Although wind energy is not yet fully harnessed, feasibility studies suggest a promising outlook for establishing both onshore and offshore wind farms.

Given Bangladesh's extensive agricultural sector, there is potential for renewable energy generation through biomass and biogas. Agricultural residues, animal waste, and municipal waste can be utilised to generate biogas, providing a sustainable energy solution, particularly for rural populations.

While Bangladesh's flat landscape limits the potential for large-scale hydropower, small-scale hydropower initiatives on rivers and canals offer an opportunity to supply energy to remote areas. These micro-hydropower systems could be a valuable supplement in locations where other renewable energy sources are less feasible.

The renewable energy sector presents significant opportunities for investors. By investing in solar, wind, biomass, and hydropower projects, investors can play a vital role in fostering a more sustainable and secure energy landscape for the country.
