Is cultural degradation at work?

February 13, 2025 00:00:00

Bangladesh is going through a cultural change due to globalisation. Some regard this shift as social degeneration, while others refer to it as the Cultural Revolution. There have been conflicting responses in society to cultural shifts in the name of Western values such as feminism, LGBTQ movements, and so-called modernism in particular. Is this really a positive revolution, or an indication of the moral and cultural decline of society?

Technology like the internet and the phenomenon of globalisation have been the important sources of western culture and philosophy in Bangladesh over the past few decades. Hollywood, web series, social media, fashion, and Western media have all contributed to the development of new ways of thinking in our society. Individualism, women's independence, and "enjoying life your own way" are concepts that have a strong hold on the younger generation. However, whether this is bringing about positive changes in society or weakening family ties and values, is a big question.

The cultural gap between rural and urban areas of Bangladesh is increasing day by day. The elite and middle classes in cities are adopting what is known as "modernity," which is characterised by Western influences in language, fashion, lifestyle, and ideas. However, rural communities continue to uphold their religious beliefs and customs. However, the debate is whether this shift is causing a cultural crisis or advancing society. Excessive use of TikTok, short video content and social media is pushing the new generation towards depression and moral deviance. Moreover, the availability of pornography and the perception of free relationships are weakening family bonds. Due to the absence of religious and moral education, young people are becoming confused about their values.

So, what's the solution? Bangladesh must maintain its own cultural and religious identity and move forward on the path of progress. The positive aspects of Western developed societies can be accepted, but it is wise to take them with a grain of salt.
