Issues with Dhaka Elevated Expressway

March 09, 2025 00:00:00

The Dhaka Elevated Expressway, designed to alleviate traffic congestion, has unfortunately introduced several challenges that raise concerns.

One significant issue is the high toll fees, which make the expressway inaccessible to many daily commuters. As a result, a large portion of vehicles continues to rely on regular roads, limiting the expressway's effectiveness in reducing traffic. Additionally, congestion at entry and exit points has led to bottlenecks, sometimes worsening travel conditions rather than improving them.

Environmental and social concerns also need to be addressed. Businesses located beneath the expressway have suffered due to reduced customer access and visibility. Furthermore, while the expressway mainly benefits private vehicles, it offers limited advantages for public transport users, further exacerbating inequality in transportation options.

While the expressway provides a faster route for some, its drawbacks highlight the need for more inclusive and sustainable urban transport solutions. Improved planning and accessibility measures are crucial to fully maximising its benefits for all residents of Dhaka.
