Keep up the Ramadan spirit

April 07, 2025 00:00:00

Now that the holy month of Ramadan and the joyous occasion of Eid have passed, it is worth reflecting on the social discipline and order observed during this sacred time. Offices, businesses, educational institutions, and transportation services operated under a structured schedule. Notably, the otherwise bustling city would fall into a rare moment of calm during Iftar, offering a peaceful atmosphere seldom experienced in our fast-paced urban lives.

People from all walks of life adhered to the customs and rituals of Ramadan with great sincerity. It was as though society took a collective pause, creating space for spiritual reflection, patience, and empathy. The sparse movement of non-essential vehicles may even have contributed to better air quality. Public smoking, an act that not only harms health but is legally prohibited in many places, became nearly invisible during this period. The reckless noise of motorbikes-often driven by young riders-was also notably absent.

Businesses operated efficiently, aiming to meet targets within limited hours, while daily life revolved around prayer, Iftar, and Suhoor, all of which cultivated a sense of purpose and discipline. Such a lifestyle fostered cooperation, mutual respect and understanding.

As the holidaymakers return from their Eid vacations and daily routines resume, the risk is that this temporary discipline will be quickly replaced by the usual chaos-traffic congestion, public disorder and a general negligence of civic norms.

Let us not allow that to happen. Instead, let us strive to carry forward the values of patience, empathy, and orderliness that characterised Ramadan. If we can uphold these standards beyond the holy month, our society can benefit greatly in the long run.
