Launching career counselling centres

November 06, 2021 00:00:00

Choosing a field of study or career is one of those nerve-wrecking major decisions that can mould the rest of your life. After completing Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent tests, students do not usually know in which field studies should be pursued. And also they are unaware of many other fields of study. Then they choose a subject that their families wish for or what their friends have chosen. Soon, they lose their interest because they have chosen them with no interests at all.

On the other hand, only having a degree is not enough in today's job market. In Bangladesh, there are some private universities, which conduct career counselling sessions by arranging job fairs, seminars, skill enhancement programmes, etc. However, it is unfortunate that no public university in the country is arranging any such programmes. University authorities should consider this issue seriously for the welfare of their students. Information about the job market requirements and proper guidelines is mandatory for students to develop their career plan before they enter the job market. Establishments of career counselling centres can help university students a lot in planning their careers.

To conclude, I, humbly request all colleges and universities to introduce career counselling centres so that students can get several ideas of the subjects they will study in the future, and also receive support for their future career.
