LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Let the New Year be universal

April 19, 2025 00:00:00

The Bengali New Year, or Pahela Boishakh, is not the festival of any particular religion or community. It is a time-honoured cultural celebration that embodies the collective heritage of the Bangalee people, nurtured and cherished for thousands of years. Yet, each year, attempts are made by certain groups to divide us by questioning the universality of this joyous occasion.

In truth, Pahela Boishakh is a vibrant festival of unity. It brings together people of all faiths-Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Christians-as well as indigenous communities, in a shared spirit of hope and celebration. It marks not just the beginning of a new calendar year, but a reaffirmation of our cultural identity, rooted in inclusivity, tradition, and the rich tapestry of life on this land.

It is a day of rediscovering our roots, embracing our heritage, and celebrating who we are. Attempts to undermine the inclusive nature of Pahela Boishakh not only threaten our cultural harmony, but also weaken our sense of national identity.

It is time to give Pahela Boishakh the unique place it deserves-as the grandest cultural festival for all. Educational institutions, the media, and state-run platforms must play a proactive role in affirming that the Bengali New Year belongs to everyone. It transcends religious and communal lines and speaks instead of our shared identity as the Bangalees.
