Modernising fire-fighting methods

April 08, 2023 00:00:00

In recent years, our fire-fighters have stood out valiantly and competently the way they have handled infernos one after another. Some of them have also sacrificed their lives while on duty. However, there are some limitations that pull them back to safeguard their duty diligently. For example; traffic jam often hinders them from reaching a place quickly. Sprawling narrow alleys in cities restrict the access of vehicles and equipment. Uninterrupted water supply is another major challenge for the fire units. With the help of city corporations and WASA, fire-fighting units can install water hydrants in areas where fire-fighters cannot enter easily with their vehicles. Even after devastating incidents of fires in previous years the authorities concerned have not yet responded the way they should.

The Bangobazar market fire, which has burnt down around 5,000 clothing shops, is another great tragedy. It is the latest in an ever-growing list of tragedies that put Bangladesh's fire safety record once again under the spotlight. The challenge for the fire-fighters has been enormous as they struggled to bring the fire under control. This incident has made us think about our fire-fighting services' modernisation. We urge the government to properly investigate this tragedy and undertake necessary action to prevent its recurrence. Our population is growing every day amid intense urbanisation. So, this is time when we should focus on the fire safety of the nation. At the same time, there is a need to be strict against the violators of safety instructions. It is only then that a safe Bangladesh can be built.
