Need for earthquake preparedness

June 03, 2021 00:00:00

A total of five mild earthquakes jolted Sylhet recently, creating panic among the people. It is true that no major casualty was reported from these incidents but experts have warned that the series of light tremors could be the sign of a major quake.

Dhaka is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. A strong earthquake could cause 10 per cent of buildings in the capital to collapse. On April 25, 2015, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake in Nepal killed at least 9,000 people. Therefore, we need to take appropriate and effective measures before any earthquake occurs. In Dhaka, mostly in the old part of it, there are many buildings that are in dilapidated shape, and may crumble down any time. These structures should be immediately demolished to prevent any untoward incidents. And new buildings need to be built in such a way that they can withstand any shock. The foundation of the building must be solid and perfect.

In addition, as soon as the quake is felt, we should keep ourselves cool. If you are at your home, you have to take shelter in the corner of the wall, under the hard bed or table. The safest way is to stay under the open sky. The elevator should not be used when leaving the house, and the head should be covered with a pillow or a thick towel. To keep people free from the horror of earthquakes, the media should raise public awareness about this natural disaster.
