LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Neglected sculpture, wounded history
May 04, 2026 00:00:00
Monuments of independence are not merely stone, metal or architecture; they are visible records of a nation's history written in blood. They remind us of sacrifice, struggle and courage. Each sculpture speaks across time, telling new generations how hard this freedom was earned.
The "Swadhinata Sangram" sculpture at Fuller Road, Dhaka University, is one such powerful symbol. It depicts the journey of our nation -- from the Language Movement to the victory of the Liberation War in 1971.
Sadly, after being vandalised by miscreants on August 5, 2024 the sculpture is still awaiting repair. This is not just damage to a structure; it is a profound disrespect for our history and national identity.
Even more worrying is that many other Liberation War-based sculptures across the country were also attacked on the same day, yet there has been little visible progress in repairing them. As a result, these important symbols of our history are gradually being lost, and the new generation may lose its connection with its roots.
Therefore, the concerned authorities should take immediate steps to repair and protect all damaged sculptures, including "Swadhinata Sangram", and bring the culprits to justice.
