New government, Ramadan mandate
February 20, 2026 00:00:00
The holy month of Ramadan is a time when Muslims engage in self-purification through fasting, restraint and spiritual reflection. However, abrupt price hikes of essential commodities during this time cause serious problems for low- and middle-income families.
Although imports of key Ramadan commodities have increased compared to previous years, prices of several essential items are already rising in local markets. Traders attribute the situation to delayed clearance of imported goods at ports following the 13th national election, which has disrupted supply chains and reduced stock availability rather than reflecting any unusual surge in demand. While many Western countries witness seasonal discounts before major festivals, Bangladesh has long experienced the opposite trend -- price hikes during Ramadan.
During the tenure of the interim government, inflationary pressure remained comparatively stable, shaping public expectations of the newly elected BNP-led government. Therefore, one of the government's immediate challenges will be to ensure adequate food supply, curb market syndicates and extortion, streamline import and distribution systems, and contain Ramadan-related inflation.
The authorities must guarantee uninterrupted clearance of essential commodities at ports. Special logistical arrangements, extended working hours, and coordinated transport support may be necessary to clear existing backlogs. Equally important is effective market monitoring. Administrative instructions alone are insufficient; regulators must verify stock levels, enforce transparent price displays, and take swift action against hoarding and collusive practices.
Ramadan is not only a month of self-abnegation but also a test of morality and social responsibility. Ensuring a peaceful and affordable Ramadan is therefore a duty of the authorities. People hope the holy month will not bring financial hardship through rising prices, but rather relief and fairness for all segments of society.
