No end to border killing

October 21, 2020 00:00:00

The rise in the number of killing of Bangladeshi nationals along the border by India's Border Security Force remains a matter of great concern for years. What is more worrying is the fact that India terms these murders as 'minor incidents'. Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Doraiswami, at a meeting with Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, reportedly said, "These small incidents occur as they (BSF) promptly open fire while people on this side of the border also do excess for extra income."

Such comments were made soon after a Bangladeshi young man - Omedul Islam, 26, - was shot dead by the BSF men along the border in Chuadanga. Omedul was gunned down despite a pledge from the chief of BSF pledged to bring the killing of Bangladeshis along the border down to zero. It's hoped that our next-door neighbor would fulfil its promise made on numerous occasions.
