Poor state of rural education

November 11, 2017 00:00:00

THE standard of education in the countryside has been declining alarmingly due to scarcity of teachers and teaching materials. Experts apprehend that if drastic development measures are not taken immediately, it is going to affect the entire education sector. As a result, our rural population will move further away from quality education. There is a Chinese proverb which says if you are planning for a year; sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant tree; but if you are planning for lifetime, educate people. No one can deny the importance of quality education in the present world.

We have a large youth force and if we can provide youths with quality education and training, they will be able to turn out income earners. As 90 per cent of our population lives in the countryside, I would like to urge upon the government to take special care so that they receive quality education. However with our limited resources it will not be an easy task for the government to provide quality education for all, but we must remember that no other investment can bring similar output than investment in rural education.
