Potato prices

A BUMPER production of potato has been achieved this season but farmers do not get fair price as the present market rate does not even cover the production cost. Newly-harvested potato has started appearing in the local markets of some districts but farmers are not happy.

In many areas each maund of the newly-harvested potato is being sold at Tk 350 to Tk 380 in the wholesale markets but farmers spend Tk 300 to Tk 350 to produce the same amount.

If farmers would not get the due price they would feel reluctant to grow potatoes. I hope that price will rise when the cold storages will start preserving the crop. The authorities should also ensure that the farmers would get proper facilities in preserving their potatoes.
