Preparing Dhaka for the future
December 08, 2025 00:00:00
Dhaka is regarded as one of the rapidly developing megacities across the globe. Its expansion has created the attendant ills such as traffic congestion, pollution, street congestion and deplorable services. Smart city technologies must be introduced in Dhaka to transform it into a sustainable city in the future.
Smart city technology is beneficial to people daily. Singapore, Seoul, and Dubai rely on data platforms to manage traffic, air quality and offer their services quickly. Dhaka has a population of over 20 million and hence ought to apply the same methods. The use of old methods is no longer up to the rising demands. A case in point is that the traffic lights would be able to vary dynamically depending on the volume of traffic. Parking signs may prevent illegal parking using digital ones. Air-quality sensors would assist physicians in making healthier choices. A smartphone application may allow individuals to report trash issues immediately, which would keep streets cleaner.
Dhaka is equipped with a metro railway, online bus tracking, and e-government, and is yet to get a complete Smart City plan. One of the solutions the city can use is collaboration between and among the government, businesses and universities to develop local Smart City concepts such as AI traffic control, smart power grids, digital land records and flood prediction. These technologies will reduce corruption, save time for residents, and make Dhaka a better place.
