Preserving village fairs

March 05, 2022 00:00:00

There was a time when village fairs were part of our everyday life. For many of us, these fairs were a must visit during our childhood. However, today's children do not know much about eating and bringing home deep-fried delicacies, kites, and spinning tops.

They are far away from enjoying the thrills of merry-go-round joyrides and buying cheap trinkets. The fanfare around these local fairs has seen a steep decline in recent years from villages, towns and cities.

A village fair is, I believe, part of our intangible heritage which needs to be preserved, protected and nurtured for the next generation. The authorities concerned should take steps to this end so that these fairs and their craftsmen can survive
