Press freedom and Bangladesh

On May 3rd, the world observes Press Freedom Day, a reminder to honour and uphold the principles of free press. It is a day of support for media professionals and a call to eliminate restrictions on the press. In a democratic society, press freedom is essential.

Information and Broadcasting Adviser recently stated that the country improved its ranking in the World Press Freedom Index 2025, largely due to reduced government interference. Bangladesh is now ranked 149th out of 180 countries, according to the latest release by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), surpassing India, Bhutan, and Pakistan.

The index evaluates press freedom across five dimensions: political context, legal framework, economic context, sociocultural context, and safety. While the rise from 165th to 149th is notable, the press freedom situation in Bangladesh is still considered "very serious."

However, journalists in Bangladesh continue to face significant challenges. Freedom of expression is essential for the foundation of a democratic society. The current interim government must take effective action to protect press freedom nationwide. If the recommendations of the Media Reform Commission are implemented, journalists will be better equipped to work freely and independently.
