Price hike of essential commodities
December 28, 2024 00:00:00
The continuous rise in the prices of essential commodities has become a pressing concern across the country. Despite government efforts to fix prices aimed at easing the sufferings of low-income groups, market prices remain unstable. This is particularly concerning as global market prices for these items are stable, with no apparent shortages or crises. Unfortunately, the government measures to curb inflation have no impact on the market.
Unethical practices of business syndicates are to blame. These traders hoard goods to create artificial shortages and later sell them at inflated prices, far above the rates set by manufacturers or the government.
Such malpractices must be addressed promptly. Strict legal action, including fines or other penalties, should be imposed to deter these traders from manipulating prices. Without decisive action, these unethical activities will persist. It raises the question: why does the government fail to control market?
This price instability places an enormous burden on university students, unemployed youths, and daily wage earners. A day labourer recently shared his plight, saying, "The prices of almost all essential items are rising, but our income are the same. How can we survive in this situation?"
The government must act now to curb unfair pricing and ensure that essentials are available at fair rates. Protecting the rights of poor and middle-income people is vital to building a prosperous nation. Rural and urban populations alike deserve relief from this economic hardship.
