Protecting rare Nilgai cubs

September 20, 2021 00:00:00

The piece of news is interesting. There is only one female Nilgai in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Sreepur of Gazipur district. Last month, it has given birth to two cubs. The rare male and female Nilgai were brought to the Safari two years ago. These were caught at Monakasha in Chapainawabganj and Manda in Naogaon. The male and female Nilgai went into hiding soon after the birth of the cubs for security. They were spotted again in the park as the cubs grew up.

Nilgai is the largest antelope in Asia. According to zoologists, the antelope were found in different places in South Asia. Nilgai was also a popular game animal. Also called blue buck, it is one of the endangered animals in the country since 1970s. It was declared extinct. Now, the birth of two cubs of Nilgai brings a glimmer of hope that Bangladesh may protect the antelope from extinction.
