Quality helmets for bikers
November 06, 2020 00:00:00
The number of road crashes involving two wheelers is increasing day by day in Dhaka city and elsewhere in the country. In most cases, the casualties are caused due to sheer negligence of the riders who refuse to wear protective gear such as helmets.
It is understandable that wearing helmets cannot prevent accidents, but it can reduce the risk of deadly injuries to head. Many young people, who are mainly teenagers and in their early 20s, can be seen driving their motorcycles without helmets. Wearing good helmets can simply save many precious lives.
However, overall use of helmets among the riders and their pillion passengers has increased recently, thanks to strict monitoring and slapping fines by the traffic police. But, the quality of helmets is questionable. There are many professional bike riders, who offer rides to commuters but do not have quality helmets for their pillions. As if they are using the helmets only for dodging traffic cops rather than protecting themselves. In order to promote use of branded helmets, the authorities should monitor quality of helmets, too, both for motorcyclists and their pillions.
