Quota system needs immediate review

April 12, 2018 00:00:00

STUDENTS are considered the future leaders of any country. They perform their sacred duties by pursuing higher studies in colleges and universities. While some of them will go abroad to pursue masters and/or doctoral degrees, a large portion of them, after completion of college/university education, will look forward to join public services in different organisations either through competitive public examinations or open interviews. With increasing number of graduates every year, pressure is mounting on the limited number of government jobs. The pressure turns further acute when quota system is applied. Quotas take away 56 per cent of the government jobs for freedom fighters and some disadvantaged groups of the population. It is evident from quota distribution that students who belong to the freedom fighter quota but did not do well at graduate and post-graduate levels and found to be least meritorious at times, are offered important government jobs just because of relations with freedom fighters. It is vital that the present quota system be immediately reviewed in the greater interest of meritorious students who are losing opportunities they so richly deserve.
