Reduce cold storage charges
March 10, 2025 00:00:00
Agriculture forms the backbone of Bangladesh's economy. It is not merely a production system but a complex economic cycle where every crisis has a ripple effect on the food chain, market system, and national security. A new crisis is emerging in the agricultural economy due to the rising charges for cold storage, an unspoken disaster for the farming community.
The recent decision to increase cold storage charges, citing rising costs of electricity, fuel, and maintenance, poses a significant threat to the agricultural production cycle. For years, farmers have struggled despite bumper harvests. Even with high yields, the lack of affordable and efficient storage facilities forces them to sell their produce at low prices. As a result, farmers are deprived of fair compensation for their crops, while reduced market supply raises the risk of commodity price hikes.
If this crisis is not addressed urgently, it will harm not only farmers but also leave a deep scar on the national economy. Therefore, I urge the concerned authorities to reconsider the increased cold storage charges and make them more affordable for farmers.
