Relocate Chandina fish market
March 15, 2026 00:00:00
The main entrance to the ChandinaUpazilaParishad and Chandina Bazar, located adjacent to the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Cumilla, has now become a nightmare for the general public. Thousands of people are enduring unbearable hardship every day due to the massive wholesale fish market that has sprung up on this vital road. As fish-laden trucks from different parts of the country park directly on the road, severe traffic congestion persists throughout the day. This has made it nearly impossible for school and college students, as well as patients, to use this route.
Furthermore, the discharge of filthy water from the fish market flows directly to the street and renders it perpetually muddy and slippery. Not only does this ruin the clothes and footwear of pedestrians, but the stench also poses a serious threat to public health. This chaotic environment is destroying the market's discipline and causing extreme distress to regular shoppers.
The long-standing demand of local residents is to relocate this fish market from the crowded road to the nearby Old Cattle Market (Puratan Gorubazar) or any other suitable location under the municipality. Since the Old Cattle Market area has ample space, relocating the market there would provide a permanent solution to both traffic congestion and public suffering.
Local residents urge the Chandina municipal authorities to take immediate and necessary steps to relocate the fish market in the interest of public welfare. Otherwise, the community may be compelled to launch a protest to secure its rights. It is hoped that the authorities concerned will take swift and effective action to transform Chandina Bazar into a congestion-free and clean area.
