Remittance inflow shines bright

May 04, 2025 00:00:00

In April 2025, Bangladesh's remittance inflow is demonstrating remarkable strength, with an inflow of $2.27 billion reported during the first 26 days of the month, showcasing ongoing financial support from the nation's expatriates. This figure mirrors trends observed in previous years, where expatriates have consistently contributed significantly to the country's economy, as noted by the $2.27 billion remittance in total reported by another source. However, this figure is slightly lower than the $1.05 billion received in just the first 12 days of April, indicating a slight decline post-Eid season.

Moreover, remittance flows have significantly bolstered the country's foreign exchange reserves, which recently crossed the $25 billion mark ahead of Eid celebrations. The remittance inflows reflect broader economic patterns, with expatriates from the USA and UAE becoming prominent sources, overtaking traditional contributors like Saudi Arabia. This financial influx is crucial as Bangladesh faces challenges including the weakest projected economic growth since the pandemic and a rising unemployment rate of 1.7 lakh within a year. Thus, while the current remittance inflow of $2.27 billion reflects robust support from expatriates, the country must navigate pressing economic challenges to sustain and increase these inflows in the future.
