Rickshaws slowing down city traffic

SLOW moving rickshaws in Dhaka are a mismatch for other motorised and fast-moving vehicles. Slow moving rickshaws are totally incompatible with the rest of our traffic and attention must be given to gradually reduce them. I think our leaders need to think in terms of decreasing the rickshaws in phases to bring down traffic jam to a tolerable level. We notice sadly that there is hardly any move on the part of the government to this effect. I do not suggest that rickshaws should be vanished from our streets overnight, but there should be a definite plan in this regard. The large number of people who make both ends meet by pulling rickshaws must not be forgotten and alternative modes of employment should be developed so that they are able to look after themselves and their families with comfort.
