Road & highways: Deadly traps

August 05, 2018 00:00:00

Despite ongoing protests demanding safe roads, the number of road accidents has not decreased. At least four people died across the country through two road accidents on Friday.

A statistic has revealed that 50 per cent people who died in road accidents are between ages of 14-35 years. Also, Dhaka-Chittagong highway is the most accident-prone highway. By placing measures to prevent accidents on that highway, the authorities can reduce the number of casualties and injuries caused by accidents.

Eid-Ul Azha is just two weeks away. It has been observed that during the Eid holidays, the number of accidents spikes. Many home-going revellers lose their lives because of poor road conditions, reckless driving and unskilled drivers.

The poor people who travel on the rooftop of the buses or trains are more susceptible to accidents. They can easily fall off when the bus brakes or if the train speeds up. There can be other dangers as well.

Aall types of rooftop travelling must stop. I hope the government will improve the road condition and implement a law that will ensure that the number of road accidents decrease.
