rowing incidence of rape

May 23, 2025 00:00:00

One of the most degrading phenomena of modern human civilisation is rape. It has sadly become a frequent headline in daily newspapers, and the incidence is growing higher day by day. Frantic wealth acquisition in an open market economy leaves less time for families, while the erosion of social norms and values-partly due to a lack of awareness and religious education-further contributes to moral decay. The absence of necessary moral guidance from teachers in schools, colleges, and universities along with a lack of regular sports and cultural activities to engage the youth constructively may all be cited as contributing factors to the rising incidence of this heinous crime in our society.

Disturbingly, such incidents are often reported in graphic details, with newspapers focusing more on the victims than on the perpetrators. Instead, these reports should be concise, emphasising the consequences of the crime-for example: "Rapist Arrested and Interrogated." Publishing the applicable penalties and fines alongside such news could serve as a deterrent.

According to criminal psychology, criminals sometimes find inspiration for wrongdoing from the media, including films and news reports. Therefore, details of the culprits-not the victims-should be made public to ensure accountability and social condemnation, while protecting the dignity and privacy of the survivors.

Arranging regular sports and cultural events, along with promoting reading habits through libraries, can help keep young people engaged in positive and enriching activities. Additionally, the government should initiate speedy trials for rape cases across the country, ensuring swift execution of verdicts. This should be accompanied by strict punishment for drug traffickers, whose actions often contribute to wider criminal behaviour.

Most importantly, parents and guardians must play an active role in monitoring, mentoring, and guiding their children. Encouraging good values, limiting excessive use of social media and electronic gadgets, and promoting empathy and discipline at home are essential in raising responsible human beings.
