Rural primary education in dire straits

March 16, 2025 00:00:00

Primary schools serve as the foundation of human development, shaping the future of young learners. However, in many rural areas, this crucial stage of education remains neglected, raising serious concerns about the future of countless children.

The condition of rural primary schools is alarming. Teachers, despite holding postgraduate degrees, often engage in activities unrelated to teaching. Some sleep in their offices, others spend hours on social media or playing cards, while many, including head teachers, prioritise their businesses or other professions over teaching. During the agricultural season, teachers can even be seen working in the fields. In their absence, school attendants are sometimes assigned to take classes. Many teachers only show up to sign the attendance register, leaving students without proper guidance. Instead of focusing on academic growth, students are pushed towards sports, and during exams, answers are openly written on the board to facilitate cheating.

This situation is deeply concerning. At an age when students should be developing a passion for learning, they are instead being taught to rely on dishonest practices. When those entrusted with shaping young minds fail in their duties, what future can we expect for these children?

Urgent action is needed to address this crisis. The authorities must ensure strict monitoring of rural schools, hold negligent teachers accountable, and prioritise quality education for all. Without intervention, the very foundation of our education system will continue to crumble.
