Save Buriganga, save Dhaka
July 05, 2018 00:00:00
When I visited Sadarghat a few days back, I saw the river Buriganga in a very sorry state. I remember during my childhood, I used to enjoy boat-rides in the river. It was vibrant and sparkling clean then. When the Mughals declared Dhaka as their capital in 1610, the shores of the Buriganga became a prime location for trade. The river was also the city's main source of drinking water. As price of land is high in Dhaka, greedy people intentionally fill-up waterbodies of the city and make a lot of profit by selling such lands. The government should free these waterbodies from land-grabbers and clean them. This will also help maintain the ecological balance of the city. Due to the pollution of waterbodies, the river has been facing a slow but sure death. Water of the river is filthy as a huge bulk of waste is dumped into it every day. We need to save the river through united efforts for the greater good of ourselves and our future generation.
