Save Kumar River from encroachment
April 08, 2026 00:00:00
The Kumar River, which flows beside West Abdalpur village under IB Thana in Kushtia, is currently facing a serious threat due to ongoing illegal encroachment. Over time, sections of both riverbanks have been occupied by individuals who have built houses, initiated farming activities, and even established brick kilns. These unplanned and unlawful uses are gradually narrowing the river and disrupting its natural course.
As the river loses its capacity to flow freely, the surrounding environment is being adversely affected. Waterlogging during the rainy season and reduced water availability in dry periods are becoming increasingly common problems. Local residents, farmers, and the overall ecosystem are already experiencing these negative impacts.
Given this situation, local people urge the authorities concerned to take immediate and effective steps to remove illegal structures, restore the river's natural flow, and protect it from further encroachment.
