Save the Dhaleshwari from pollution

THE rivers of the country play an important role in the life and livelihoods of people. But the rivers are being polluted by our indifference. Rivers and canals are used as waste bins as household and industrial wastes are being indiscriminately thrown into them.

The government accords permission to new factories for industrial development of the country and when these factories are located beside any river, it is the responsibility of the government to make sure that industrial wastes are first treated before they are disposed to neighbouring water bodies. As a result of continuous disposal of wastes in river water, multifarious problems occur in the environment making our life further complicated. The Dhaleshwari river has been in focus in recent times. Factories located along the river continuously dispose of their wastes into the water of the river in violation of ethical norms and regulations set by the concerned authorities. The worst victims of such indiscriminate disposal of wastes are the fish and other living organisms in the river. Excess wastes in water may create lack of oxygen in the water and fishes may die as a result. People living beside the river use this water for household and other uses and are easily infected by deadly diseases. According to dermatologists, water polluted by industrial pollutants is a storehouse of bacteria for innumerable skin diseases. I would like to request the concerned authorities to take effective steps in this regard and save this river from extensive pollution.
