Secure cyberspace for youths

January 01, 2022 00:00:00

Cyber bullying is a crime, which is on the rise in our society. It is increasing day by day due to modern devices and free access to social media. People of all ages, especially women and children are becoming victims of cyber crime on social media. Citing a survey conducted in several Asian countries, including Bangladesh, the BBC reports that the risk of harassment through social media is mounting at an alarming rate in these countries, with women and minors being the most harassed. To attend online classes, many parents have bought mobile, laptop, and tabs for their children. But instead of studying, students are wasting time on social media platforms.

In our male-dominated society, it is often seen that the victims, who are mainly women, are accused and condemned for cyber crime. Whenever a personal image or information goes viral, most people focus on the victim rather than the criminal and crime. Moreover, many people who fear for the family's reputation in society prevent the victim from making allegations of harassment and demanding justice. In some cases during the prosecution, the victims are harassed even by law enforcement. Raising awareness among children and young people about cyber crimes can be a good step in this regard. Reporting to the Cyber Crime Investigation Division of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime, Cyber Police Centre, Hello City App, or calling 999 can help if anyone is a victim of online violence and cyber harassment. In order to realise our dream of digital Bangladesh, it is necessary to create secure cyberspace for everyone.
