Shabby movie theatres need to go

Last week, I went to a cinema hall to watch Humayun Ahmad's 'Debi' movie. I was disappointed to see the poor condition of the theatre. It was dark and gloomy.

The pathetic condition of movie theatres in the country is one reason why audiences are not interested to watch movies on the big screens. Apart from a few multiplex cinema halls of Dhaka and Chattogram, most theatres across the country are in shambles.

I hope that the government will take some steps to help the theatre owners renovate their halls and ensure that the audience can enjoy the films in a nice and comfortable environment there.

Also, good movies can be imported from the international market. There is a demand for foreign movies as theatres like Star Cineplex and Blockbuster are doing quite well by screening these. Without a good number of standard theatres, we cannot expect the local movie industry to stand on its own feet firmly.
