Shammi Akhtar is no more

SHAMMI AKHTER, one of our most favourite singers, is no more. She was suffering from cancer for last six years. A highly popular playback singer, Shammi Akhtar rendered her voice in more than 300 films. Shammi won the hearts of millions with her melodious voice. She was awarded the National Film Award for best female playback singer for the film 'Bhalobaslei Ghor Bandha Jay Na' in 2010.

Akhter was groomed as a singer under Ustad Gaur Babu. She first recorded a Nazrul song 'Eki Oporoop Roop-e Maa Tomaye' for Bangladesh Betar in 1970. She shot into fame with her songs "Dhaka Shohor Aisha" and "Ami Jemon Achhi Temon Robo Bou Hobona Rey" for the film 'Ashikkhito' and scores of other modern songs.

She started her musical career with Radio and television in 1980 and never looked back. Shammi Akhtar will live in our memory for her exceptional voice and unique presentation. May her soul rest in peace!
