Shocking death in an elevator
April 01, 2018 00:00:00
IT was shocking to see a 7-year-old girl, Alveera Rahman dying as an elevator at a high-rise apartment building in Shanti Nagar Dhaka started moving up uncontrollably with the girl stuck inside the doors. I can not even imagine the state of her parents as they had to see their beloved daughter dying in a situation like this. Dhaka has been a place of booming high rise buildings and many of them have faulty lifts. The victim used to live with her parents on the 15th floor and on that fateful night, her family was heading out and had boarded the lift together. Many residents of the building alleged that the authorities did not take any step to fix the faults in the lift. It also came out that the sensors of the lift are often out of order. Such untoward incidents are quite likely if we continue to ignore safety rules and standards. I only hope that such an incident as this one shall be an eye-opener for all so that those responsible for maintenance and upkeep of high rise structures perform their duties religiously and instances of unfortunate happenings like this is not repeated. May the soul of Alveera rest in peace.
